Collect:

Father, we praise you:

through your Word and Holy Spirit you created all things.

You reveal your salvation in all the world

by sending to us Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh.

Through your Holy Spirit

you give us a share in your life and love.

Fill us with the vision of your glory,

that we may always serve and praise you,

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

 
Reading: Romans 5:1-5

Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.

 
Reading: John 16:12-15

Jesus said, "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you."

 
Reflection Questions

1. The church then, today, and always finds itself trying to understand and live its faith in the midst of social, cultural, and global circumstances that change rapidly, what does the presence of the Holy Spirit mean for such discernment?
2. Can we trust the Spirit to guide us in discerning what it means to live out Christian faith today?
3. God’s love for us and to make it possible for us to love God. How is the Holy Spirit made manifest today?

 
Closing Prayer:

God of heaven and earth,

before the foundation of the universe and the beginning of time

you are the triune God:

the Author of creation,

the eternal Word of salvation,

and the life-giving Spirit of wisdom.

Guide us to all truth by your Spirit,

that we may proclaim all that Christ revealed

and rejoice in the glory he shared with us.

Glory and praise to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,

now and for ever. Amen.

 
The Message:
Reading: Romans 5:1-5

5 ^1-2 By entering through faith into what God has always wanted to do for us—set us right with him, make us fit for him—we have it all together with God because of our Master Jesus. And that’s not all: We throw open our doors to God and discover at the same moment that he has already thrown open his door to us. We find ourselves standing where we always hoped we might stand—out in the wide open spaces of God’s grace and glory, standing tall and shouting our praise.

^3-5 There’s more to come: We continue to shout our praise even when we’re hemmed in with troubles, because we know how troubles can develop passionate patience in us, and how that patience in turn forges the tempered steel of virtue, keeping us alert for whatever God will do next. In alert expectancy such as this, we’re never left feeling shortchanged. Quite the contrary—we can’t round up enough containers to hold everything God generously pours into our lives through the Holy Spirit!

 
Reading: John 16:12-15

12-15 “I still have many things to tell you, but you can’t handle them now. But when the Friend comes, the Spirit of the Truth, he will take you by the hand and guide you into all the truth there is. He won’t draw attention to himself, but will make sense out of what is about to happen and, indeed, out of all that I have done and said. He will honor me; he will take from me and deliver it to you. Everything the Father has is also mine. That is why I’ve said, ‘He takes from me and delivers to you.’
